Lecturer in Game Design

(2020-Present) The University of Salford

Research: Focussing on the application of games and immersive technology in educational contexts, lead the development of a historical simulation game for use in KS2/3 history classes. Consulted on funded projects as part of the Metaverse Special Interest Group and Virtual Production Research Group. Successfully funded the universities Digital Twin project, blending 3D scanning, metaverse tools, and location based training/events.

Programme Leader: Worked with programme staff to deliver a collaborative and engaging curriculum of undergraduate study.

Module Leader: Successfully lead a set of 6 practice-based group modules across all levels, from curriculum design, delivery, assessment and marking.

Content Generation: Created a library of course content including, lecture, workshop, and practical projects.

Hybrid Teaching: Engaged with technology to hybridise delivery of content across digital platforms, enabling students to both learn and receive feedback on practical assessments.

Collaborative Engagement: Embraced and facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration for final year projects. Supported collaboration between students and researchers to produce a culturally and research relevant prototype featured in university press.

Tutoring: Provided ongoing support to individual and groups of students on technical, production and written work.

Industry Engagement: Connected with industry and researchers. Brought in expert consultation, speakers, and industry live briefs.

(2018-2020) Carbon Digital

Design & Production: Designed and successfully delivered a 6-game-in-1 VR experience on the Oculus Go, showcasing jobs at Network Rail graduate recruitment events.

Rapid Prototyping: Created interactive data oriented AR experiences for several successful pitches.

Client Facing: Contributed technical expertise in client meetings and aided in the success of multiple pitches. Provided client demo sessions and gathered feedback to create content that met and exceeded expectations.

Team Development: Designed digital workflows to allow team members to work together more efficiently. Migrated the team to a git based agile workflow providing better redundancy and ability to quickly pivot based on client feedback.

Tools Development: Provided troubleshooting for both Unreal and Unity game engines to artists, and created design tools to fill gaps and streamline workflow.

Unity AR Developer

(2018+) Freelance

Rapid Prototyping / Brief Response: Created a working AR replica of a Samsung Smart Watch using real-time, on body object tracking to  augment a successful marketing pitch.
Rapid Prototyping / Brief Response : Used SLAM based AR with ARCore to prototype a mobile learning app that was successfully pitched to BBC Worldwide for production in 2020.
Rapid Prototyping: Mapping game geometry onto 3D printed terrain, created an interactive AR physics game deployed at a trade show, enabling play on real-world non-linear geometry.

Created bespoke applications to aggregate data and compile information from multiple sources so analysts could focus on other tasks.

Interests

I love to make things, physical, virtual, electronic or edible.

I like speculative fiction books, films and series, more specifically the Cyberpunk, Post-Apocalyptic and Science Fiction genres.

I enjoy many varied game types in my spare time, and like to deconstruct game mechanics to figure out processes and how they interact. Strategy and simulation games are my favourite genres.
